The automation builder remains the deepest in the market – 500+ recipes, nested conditional logic, and multi-step workflows that Make Mailchimp look like a toy. But the pricing story has gotten complicated: costs escalate fast as your list grows, and a November 2025 billing change now charges for unsubscribed and bounced contacts.

We used ActiveCampaign for 7 weeks on the Plus and Pro plans, running email campaigns, building automation workflows, testing the AI features, and managing a CRM pipeline for a B2B client with 8,000 contacts. Here is what we found.

Visual Automation Builder

This is ActiveCampaign’s crown jewel. The drag-and-drop automation builder supports if/then conditional logic, branching workflows, split testing of entire automations (Pro plan), and triggers based on virtually any contact behavior – form submissions, site visits, email engagement, purchases, tags, custom events. 500+ pre-built automation recipes give you starting templates for common workflows like welcome sequences, abandoned cart recovery, lead nurturing, and re-engagement campaigns. We built a 12-step B2B lead nurturing sequence with 4 conditional branches in about 45 minutes. No other email platform matches this depth.

Active Intelligence – AI Features

Launched in May 2025, Active Intelligence is a system-wide AI engine powered by billions of data points. The AI Campaign Builder generates full email campaigns from a text prompt. The AI Automation Builder creates multi-step nurture flows from natural language descriptions. Predictive Sending analyzes individual contact behavior to calculate the optimal send time – recalculated weekly for each contact. Insight Cards (November 2025) surface proactive AI recommendations directly on your campaigns page. The AI Content Generator handles subject lines, email copy, and even images matching your templates. In our testing, Predictive Sending improved open rates by roughly 12% compared to manual send-time selection.

CRM and Sales Pipeline

The built-in CRM adds visual deal pipelines, contact management, deal tracking with win probability scoring, task assignment, and sales workflow automation. It is best suited for teams under 15-20 people running 1-3 pipelines. We managed a B2B sales pipeline with 8 reps and it handled the workflow well. The catch: CRM is an add-on that starts at $49/month for Pipelines and $85/month for Sales Engagement – on top of your marketing plan. Lead Scoring and Site Tracking

Lead scoring is highly flexible – score contacts based on any action: form submissions, email engagement, site visits, deal status, or custom events. Predictive Lead Scoring uses machine learning to identify contacts most likely to convert, learning from your historical data patterns. Site tracking monitors visits, clicks, and navigation paths on your website, feeding that behavior data into automations. We set up lead scoring rules that automatically moved high-scoring contacts to a “hot leads” pipeline stage, triggering a sales notification – all without manual intervention.

Multi-Channel Marketing

ActiveCampaign now supports email, SMS, WhatsApp (launched July 2025 after the Hilos acquisition), site messaging, and retargeting ads from one platform. WhatsApp messaging includes inbox management and sophisticated workflow automation – a significant addition for businesses with international or mobile-first audiences. Multi-channel campaign generation lets you coordinate messages across email, SMS, and WhatsApp in a single automation flow.

Deliverability and Email Performance

ActiveCampaign ranks among the top performers in independent deliverability testing: 94.2% inbox placement on Gmail, 91.8% on Outlook, and 93.5% on Yahoo. The average open rate across the platform is 39.26% (2025 benchmark). Built-in spam testing via SpamAssassin, automatic suppression of bouncing contacts, and required SPF/DKIM domain authentication all contribute to strong deliverability. In our testing, every campaign landed in the primary inbox across Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo.

The only reason this is not a 10 is that the Starter plan limits automations to 5 actions with no branching – you need the Plus plan ($49/month) to unlock the real power.

AI Features – 8.5/10

Active Intelligence with 25+ AI agents is a genuinely useful addition. The AI Campaign Builder and AI Automation Builder save real time. Predictive Sending measurably improved our open rates. Insight Cards surface actionable recommendations without you having to dig through reports. The AI is not transformative on its own – it supplements human strategy rather than replacing it – but it adds meaningful efficiency to daily workflows.

CRM Capabilities – 7.5/10

Solid for SMBs with simple sales processes. Visual pipelines, deal tracking, win probability, and sales automation work well for teams under 20. The integration between marketing automation and CRM is tight – contacts flow seamlessly between marketing nurture and sales pipeline. The downside: CRM is an add-on cost ($49-85/month), and it is not a replacement for HubSpot or Salesforce for serious enterprise sales operations.

Ease of Use – 7.0/10

Basic email campaigns are straightforward to set up. But mastering the automation builder – the reason you are paying for ActiveCampaign – takes 1-2 weeks of dedicated learning. The email template editor is the weakest point: it is described as buggy by multiple users, especially for mobile formatting, and lacks separate mobile design controls. Documentation does not always match the current UI, which adds friction.

Integrations – 9.0/10

900+ native integrations cover virtually every marketing and ecommerce use case. Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento, Stripe, WordPress, Salesforce, and Microsoft Dynamics are all supported. 40+ new integrations added in 2025 including Wix, SOCi, and Webflow. Zapier fills gaps for anything not natively supported. Salesforce and Dynamics integrations require the Enterprise plan.

Pricing Value – 7.0/10

The Starter plan at $15/month for 1,000 contacts is competitive, but it is too limited to be useful for real automation work. The Plus plan at $49/month unlocks the features that matter. Costs escalate quickly with list growth – 10,000 contacts on Pro runs $375/month. Since November 2025, new customers are charged for their entire contact list including unsubscribed and bounced contacts. Some users report aggressive billing practices and difficulty cancelling (requires a Zoom call). The value is there if you use the automation depth, but the pricing model penalizes list growth.
