Updated March 20, 2026

Notion has gone from note-taking app to AI-powered workspace in the span of two years. The September 2025 launch of Notion 3.0 introduced autonomous AI agents, multi-model support, and workspace-wide intelligence. The February 2026 follow-up added Custom Agents that run 24/7 on triggers and schedules. In March 2026, AI image generation arrived. The platform now consolidates docs, wikis, databases, project management, and AI into a single tool used by 100+ million people.

We used Notion AI on the Business plan for 6 weeks with a 15-person marketing team – running editorial calendars, building knowledge bases, testing Custom Agents, and using AI writing across hundreds of docs. Here is what we found.

See how Notion AI compares in our Best AI Writing Tools 2026 guide.

1. What Is Notion AI?

From notes app to $11 billion AI workspace in a decade.

Notion AI is an integrated artificial intelligence layer built into Notion’s all-in-one workspace platform. It combines AI writing assistance, knowledge management Q&A, database automation, autonomous agents, and content generation directly within docs, wikis, databases, and project management tools. Founded in 2013 by Ivan Zhao and Simon Last, Notion nearly died in 2015 – the founders laid off their team, relocated to Kyoto, Japan, and spent 18 months rebuilding from scratch. That rewrite became Notion 2.0, which launched in 2018 and grew from 1 million users to 100 million by 2024.

The company has raised $418 million, reached a $11 billion valuation in December 2025, and generates roughly $600 million in annual recurring revenue. 80% of users are outside the United States. Since September 2025 (Notion 3.0), the AI capabilities have expanded aggressively – autonomous agents, multi-model support with GPT-5.4, Claude Opus 4.1, and o3, connected workspace intelligence, and AI image generation. The platform now replaces 3-5 separate SaaS tools for most teams.

2. Key Features We Tested

Six weeks of docs, databases, agents, and AI across a 15-person marketing team.

Custom Agents (February 2026)

This is Notion’s most significant feature addition. Custom Agents are autonomous AI teammates that run 24/7 based on schedules or triggers. You describe what you want in plain language, choose which AI model powers the agent, and Notion builds it. Our content team agent automatically triaged incoming briefs, assigned writers based on expertise tags in our team database, and posted updates to Slack. Remote’s IT Ops Manager reports saving 20 hours per week. Agents handle multi-step workflows for up to 20 minutes, working across hundreds of pages simultaneously. The catch: they are free through May 3, 2026, then require Notion Credits on Business and Enterprise plans.

Bottom line: Notion AI provides in-line writing assistance within any page – draft content, fix grammar, change tone, expand or shorten text, generate first drafts from prompts. The multi-model picker lets you choose between GPT-5.4, Claude Opus 4.1, o3, and MiniMax M2.5 depending on the task. In practice, Claude Opus produced the best long-form drafts, while GPT-5.4 excelled at concise summaries and rewrites. The writing quality is good but not best-in-class compared to dedicated AI writing tools like Jasper or standalone ChatGPT – the advantage is that it works contextually within your existing documents.

3. Scoring Breakdown

How we rated Notion AI across six categories.

AI Writing Quality – 8.0/10

Strong in-context writing assistance with multi-model support. The ability to choose between GPT-5.4, Claude Opus 4.1, and o3 depending on the task is a genuine advantage. AI autofill for databases is excellent. However, for dedicated long-form writing, standalone tools like ChatGPT and Claude still produce better results. The writing AI is good but not the reason to buy Notion – the workspace intelligence is.

Bottom line: Best-in-class all-in-one workspace. Docs, wikis, databases, projects, forms, dashboards, and now AI agents – virtually everything in one tool. Few competitors match the breadth. The block-based editor allows infinite customization. The template ecosystem is massive. This is Notion’s core strength and the primary reason teams choose it over alternatives.

4. Pricing

Full AI access requires the Business plan. No mid-tier option.

Important note: Custom Agents are free to try through May 3, 2026. After that date, they will require Notion Credits available as an add-on for Business and Enterprise plans. Credit pricing has not been fully announced. Notion also offers a startup program with up to 6 months free including AI access.

The teams that get the most value – and the ones that should look elsewhere.

Not ideal for: Large engineering teams already on Jira (Confluence is tighter and cheaper). Cost-conscious large teams ($18-20/user scales fast). Heavy offline users (offline mode is too limited). Long-form writers (block editor is not optimized for essays). Teams needing advanced project management (no native Gantt, dependencies, or time tracking).

7. Notion AI vs Alternatives

8.0

How it compares to the four most common alternatives.

Notion AI’s advantage is workspace breadth and autonomous agents. ClickUp AI is better for project management-heavy teams. Confluence AI is significantly cheaper and tighter with Jira. Coda AI excels at operational workflows with spreadsheet-level logic. If your primary need is a knowledge-first workspace with the deepest AI integration, Notion wins. If cost is the priority, Confluence offers comparable AI at a fraction of the price.

8. Frequently Asked Questions

8.2
FreeYes

Common questions about Notion AI in 2026.

Is Notion AI worth the price increase?

It depends on team size and use case. For small teams (5-15 people) who actively use AI writing, Ask Notion, and Custom Agents, the Business plan delivers strong value by replacing multiple tools. For larger teams or those who only need basic workspace features, the jump from $10-12/user (Plus) to $18-20/user (Business) just for AI access is a harder sell. Confluence includes AI from $6.05/user.

Bottom line: As of March 2026, Notion supports GPT-5.4 (OpenAI), Claude Opus 4.1 (Anthropic), o3 (OpenAI reasoning), and MiniMax M2.5 (first open-weight model). A model picker lets you choose the best model for each task. Custom Agents can also be configured to use specific models.
