Semrush’s keyword database is the largest in the industry — 27.9 billion keywords across 142 countries. That’s not just a vanity number. In our testing, it consistently surfaced long-tail keywords and question-based queries that Ahrefs and Moz simply missed.
The Keyword Magic Tool is where most users will spend their time, and it earns that attention. We entered 50 seed keywords across three niches and compared the output against Ahrefs’ Keywords Explorer. Semrush returned 15–30% more keyword suggestions on average, with particularly strong coverage in non-English markets. The filtering is excellent — you can slice by intent type (informational, commercial, transactional, navigational), word count, SERP features, and competitive density in seconds.
Keyword Difficulty scores were accurate in our testing. The crawler was fast — the 25,000-page site completed in under 40 minutes — and the results were well-organized with a clear health score. What sets Semrush apart from competitors is the prioritization. Each issue gets a severity rating, and the tool explains not just what’s wrong but why it matters and how to fix it.
The integration with Google Search Console and Google Analytics adds real context. You’re not just seeing technical issues in isolation — you can see which broken pages actually get traffic, which makes prioritizing fixes much easier.
One limitation: the crawl limits. On the Pro plan, you’re capped at 100,000 pages per project per month. For most small-to-mid sites that’s fine, but larger sites will need the Guru (300K) or Business (1M) tier.

This is where Semrush genuinely has no equal. The competitive analysis suite is the deepest, most detailed we’ve tested — and it’s not particularly close.
Traffic Analytics uses clickstream data from 200 million real users to estimate competitor traffic, engagement metrics, top pages, and traffic sources. We compared its estimates against actual Google Analytics data for sites we control, and the estimates were within 10–15% accuracy for sites with 10K+ monthly visits. That’s remarkably good for an estimation tool.
The Market Explorer tool maps out your entire competitive landscape — market share, audience overlap, growth trends, and seasonal patterns. We used it to identify two competitors we hadn’t been tracking that were quietly stealing traffic in our test niche. The Domain vs. Domain comparison lets you see exactly where you overlap and where competitors have gaps you can exploit.
The PPC research is a nice bonus. You can see competitors’ ad copy, landing pages, and estimated ad spend. For teams running both SEO and paid campaigns, having this data in the same platform as your organic research is a genuine workflow advantage.

The Content Marketing Toolkit is a Guru-and-above feature, and it’s solid — though not best-in-class compared to dedicated content tools like Surfer SEO or Frase.

It analyzes the top 10 ranking pages for your target keyword and gives specific recommendations — word count targets, semantically related terms to include, and readability adjustments. We found its suggestions practical and accurate about 75% of the time. The remaining 25% were either too generic or based on competitor content that wasn’t actually relevant.
Topic Research is useful for content ideation. Enter a topic and it maps out subtopics, questions people ask, related searches, and trending headlines. We used it to plan a 30-day content calendar and it cut our ideation time roughly in half.
The Content Audit tool scans your existing content and flags posts that need updating, are performing well, or should be consolidated. The integration with Google Analytics and Search Console means it uses real performance data, not just SEO metrics.
Backlink Analytics & Link Building
Semrush tracks 43 trillion backlinks across 390 million referring domains — numbers that rival Ahrefs’ backlink index. In our head-to-head comparison, Semrush found 92% of the same backlinks Ahrefs did for our test domains, and it discovered a handful that Ahrefs missed (particularly newer links less than 7 days old).
The Backlink Audit tool is where Semrush adds real value beyond raw data. It scores every backlink on a toxicity scale and identifies potentially harmful links that could trigger a Google penalty. One edge Semrush has over Ahrefs: the backlink gap analysis. You can compare your backlink profile against up to four competitors simultaneously and instantly see domains linking to them but not to you. We used this to build a targeted outreach list of 85 domains — a task that would’ve taken hours manually.
AI Visibility & Semrush One
🔮 Monitor how AI answers reference your brand
This is the newest addition to Semrush — and potentially the most important for forward-thinking marketers. Semrush One bundles the traditional SEO toolkit with the AI Visibility Toolkit, which tracks how your brand appears in AI-generated answers across platforms like ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity, and more.
In our testing, the AI Visibility dashboard showed us something surprising: one of our test brands was mentioned in AI responses 40% less frequently than a smaller competitor — despite having stronger traditional SEO metrics. That’s the kind of insight you simply can’t get from any other tool, and it matters more every month as AI search grows.
